tips

1. Choose an appropriate location.
Most flowering bulbs prefer full sun, but that can be almost anywhere in the spring, before the trees leaf out. So don’t overlook a spot that seems too dark, just because it’s a bit shady in the autumn.

Next to a village bench would be great place for everyone to be able to enjoy the flowers in spring time.

2. If you are planting bulbs in communal areas think where would look best. Bulbs planted around bus stops, by park benches, alongside paths can all look wonderful and brighten up every day surroundings. However do remember to check with your local council before planting on common ground.

3. Alternatively you can easily brighten up your street by encouraging all your neighbours to plant bulbs in their front gardens or window boxes. They could plant bulbs along pathways or in pots outside the front door. Even if you live in an urban environment where there isn’t a spare patch of earth, think creatively. Bulbs can be planted in almost everything. An old shoe, an old bathtub, a kettle, a saucepan… Whatever you have lying around use it to plant bulbs in.

4. If there is a large grassy area near your house why not scatter bulbs over it and create a lawn of flowers. Simply toss bulbs in the air and dig holes and plant where ever they fall.

5. Many spring-flowering bulbs are ideal for brightening up the base of trees before they come into full leaf. The soil beneath trees is moist and light, offering the perfect growing conditions for anemones and crocuses.

6. Be inventive and have fun!
