A highly popular hybrid of Allium aflatunense, “Purple Sensation” never fails to make an impact. This ornamental flower produces a tuft of large, pale-green strap-shaped leaves with a strong stem holding high a globe of tightly packed rich purple florets. This beautiful flower appears from April and lasts for quite a long period. The spherical clusters of fragrant blooms make a great focal point in any garden, Allium “Purple Sensation” also flourishes as a cut flower and the seed head can also be used in dried flower arrangements.
Growing up to 100cm in height and with its dense mass of purple starry flowers measuring 7cm across, Allium “Purple Sensation” is sure to turn heads and looks spectacular grouped in pots, in a sunny, well-drained border or as part of a Mediterranean-themed garden scheme. Alliums look best planted in between medium-sized herbaceous plants, which help to mask the strap-shaped leaves, which fade by the time the flowers appear.
Flowers make our lives livelier. What more can we ask for if it is full of medicinal “powers”. Allium with an onion odor, has an antibiotic properties. Hmmm, great to give as valentines day gifts.
