What is it about?

You’ve had the big lunch… what next??  The Big Bulb Plant!

On 18th July we asked you all to sit down and eat together for THE BIG LUNCH.  This autumn, we are asking you to get your street together to plant bulbs in your community.

We want YOU to work together, have fun and plant spring bulbs with your neighbours to give your surroundings a makeover.

Plant bulbs in a public area that is in need of an uplift or get every family on the street to plant bulbs in a container and pop it on the doorstep.
The planting of spring flowering bulbs will make a huge difference and transform the aesthetics of the community come spring time!
Why not recycle unwanted items such as old tyres, watering cans, shoes, pots and pans e.t.c and use them as containers in which to plant spring bulbs – It does NOT have to cost a lot of money to COLOUR THE COMMUNITY!

Simply choose a day between 01 September and 30 November to get your hands dirty and plant some bulbs! If everyone brings 10 bulbs each your area will be transformed in spring. We look forward to hearing from you and finding out about the bulbs planted in your neighbourhood!

The first 100 communities to register here will receive 250 free bulbs to start the bulb planting off!

Thanks for Life

This year’s BIG BULB PLANT has partnered with Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI), in support of its Thanks for Life campaign to eradicate polio.

The project, called Focus On The Crocus, http://www.focusonthecrocus.org, will set a new Guinness World Record. Supporting THE BIG BULB PLANT and working in partnership with the National Trust, Learning Through Landscape, Groundwork and others, Rotary clubs are approaching public authorities, local societies and schools, to encourage them to take part by planting the most bulbs in one hour at individual sites.

To enter the Guinness World Records for the largest bulb planting, you need to find and get in touch with your local Rotary club here http://www.ribi.org/club-search. Planting can be on any day during October. A nationwide bulb planting will take place on the 2nd of October 2010. The ’Ruby Giant’ crocus will be planted in gardens, parks, schools and communities across the country – so that they can take centre stage when blooming on Rotary Day, 23 February 2011.

In addition to funding supplies, members of Rotary clubs across the world also attend a number of the 709,000 vaccination booths, to personally help administer the polio vaccine to over 172 million children during any one of India’s National Immunisation Days (NID’s). By working with WHO, UNICEF and other agencies, millions of young lives have been saved from this crippling and sometimes fatal disease. During the week surrounding the 23rd of February, there will be many activities taking place across Great Britain and Ireland where you can have fun and raise funds to help Rotary International reach its £200m target to End Polio Now, by 2013.

A donation of just 20p per bulb will immunise a child in one of the four remaining countries, thanks to a challenge grant provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
